Introduced Resolution to Reopen WV Republican Primary Fails Committee Vote

A resolution aimed at reopening the West Virginia Republican Primary was introduced Friday in the party’s resolution committee but failed on a 4-3 vote, effectively closing the easiest path to making a change before the 2026 election.

With the resolution rejected at the committee level, any effort to reopen the Republican Primary ahead of the May 12, 2026 primary election now faces significantly higher hurdles. Party insiders to Politismack that the only remaining option would be to offer floor amendments during the full State Republican Executive Committee meeting, a move that is typically more difficult and uncertain.

That full state committee meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Charleston. This meeting is expected to be the last realistic opportunity to reopen the Republican Primary before voters head to the polls in May.
