Flash Flooding Prompts State of Emergency in Mineral County

Governor Patrick Morrisey has declared a state of emergency for Mineral County following severe flash flooding caused by heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

Floodwaters from New Creek overflowed into parts of Keyser, leading to evacuations of downtown streets, including Water Street, Harley O. Staggers Drive, and a section of Stony Run. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for Mineral County, as well as Boone, Logan, Lincoln, Wyoming, and Raleigh counties.

Crews from the Division of Highways responded to reports of high water and debris blocking sections of state Route 46. Conditions began to improve by Tuesday night, with water receding in several areas. While no major damage to homes has been reported, several basements were flooded.

In addition to damaged roads, one school and the local Walmart sustained water damage. No injuries were reported, though one rescue was performed during the flooding.

Emergency personnel and resources have been deployed, and officials say there are currently no unmet needs. No donation or volunteer assistance is being requested at this time. The state of emergency will remain in effect for 30 days unless rescinded earlier.

A shelter has been opened at Keyser Presbyterian Church for residents in need.
